Briefing cum Dialogue Session on Singapore Voluntary Packaging Agremeent |

Most packaging for our goods such as food, drinks, toiletries, etc, ends up as trash. Packaging makes up about one-third of household waste. Packaging waste can be recycled. There is also scope to minimize packaging waste by redesign or changing to another material. Some countries have implemented laws which make producers take responsibility for the environmental impact of their packaging (e.g. they have to bear the costs for recovery and recycling of the packaging waste).
In Singapore, instead of moving straight away to introducing legislation to curb packaging waste, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has decided to work together with industry to develop a voluntary programme, known as the Singapore Voluntary Packaging Agrement, in which industry would have more flexibility to adopt cost-effective solutions for reducing packaging waste. The programme also facilitates and fosters closer collaboration among industry members, the community and the government.
To enable members to have a better understanding of the Singapore Voluntary Packaging Agreement and how the industry can play a part to reduce packaging waste, SMa Plastics and Packaging Industry Group, Packaging Council of Singapore and the National Environment Agency (NEA) jointly organised a Briefing cum Dialogue Session on Singapore Voluntary Packaging Agreement.
Members were also able engage in a Q&A with NEA official. The session was chaired by Mr Albert Lim, Chairman of the SMa Plastics and Packaging IG and Packaging Council of Singapore. He is also the Co-Chair for the NEA Task Force for the Singapore Voluntary Packaging Agreement.
